Allen Hayes was born to a deaf mother. This made him to learn the supremacy of visual expression early on in life. He became interested in codes and linguistics while he was in high school and he transformed this into a talent for printmaking and painting. His clear talent made him to win a scholarship to study at Northern Illinois University. Here, he concentrated in printmaking and focused on etching. He made a name for himself with his own artwork as well as the reviews and criticisms he wrote for a national art publication. His postmodern, unique etchings with their use of colors and semiotics which are remarkable can be found in public and private collections and exhibitions internationally. Framed Allen Hayes art can also be found in all corners of the world. His art is also available in many leading online stores. He was eagerly accepted when he applied to the Art Institute of Chicago, and, from a pool of 3,500 applicants, he joined one of 5 graduate positions. He further refined his style of approach to etching. And since he was born of a deaf mother, art became a very important tool for communication in his family and he regards his mother’s hearing disability as instrumental in inspiring him to “integrate and develop movement, time, and space into visio-linguistic codices.” Dr. Driesbach inspired him and also recognized his talent immediately and introduced him to 2 nationally respected masters in the technique of viscosity printing - Krishna Reddy and Stanley Hayter.
