Steven Harvey Art

Steven Harvey (Born in 1965) was born in Sydney where he also grew up. He studied at the City Art Institute in Sydney where he obtained a Bachelor of Art degree in Education. He works mainly with acrylics, inks and oils, and brandishes color in textured slabs. This creates a strong material presence. Harvey’s paintings exude physicality, not only in the coagulation, rasp and grit of paint, but also in their scale. In 1989, he completed a Post Graduate Diploma and in 1994, he graduated with a Masters of Art from the College of Fine Arts of the University of New South Wales, where he majored in painting. Heavily impastoed surfaces are attributes to his formal aesthetic, the painstaking accumulation of oil paint layers on canvas that in themselves become sculptural forms. He has participated in numerous key invitational and touring exhibitions, including The National Trust, Sydney Painting at the S.H. Ervin Gallery, and A Tribute to Western Australia (at the Holmes à Court Gallery, Perth), where, alongside those by Kate Turner and Peter Sharp, he featured artworks exploring the Western Australian landscape. For him, journeys into the Australian coastline and desert, as well as remote locations including the Polish highlands, the islands of Papua New Guinea, the Daintree Rainforest or the Rajasthan desert, India have formed a vital element in his art process. Courtesy of his travel, the framed Steven Harvey art can be found in almost all corners of the world. He’s represented in public collections such as New England Regional Art Museum, The University of New South Wales, Artbank, The Macquarie Group Collection, Tamworth Regional Gallery, and private collections in the United Kingdom, the United States of America, New Zealand and Australia. He currently lives and works in Sydney.
