Heywood Hardy (Born 1843) is a painter of hunting, genre and equestrian scenes often set in the 18th century. He was also a distinguished portraitist. He was the youngest son of James Hardy Snr who was also an artist. In 1864, he entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and studied with Pielse who was known for his battle paintings. Hardy then visited Antwerp and returned to England shortly before he turned 25 years. In 1870, he decided to settle in London and here his career thrived and he was elected a member of several societies, including the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, the Royal Society of Painters and Etchers, and the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. Hardy became an Associate of the Royal Watercolor Society. He also worked as an illustrator, and contributed to The Graphic Magazine and The Illustrated London News. In 1909, he moved to West Sussex, and 17 years later, he embarked upon a unique phase in his career, working on biblical scenes that were portraying Jesus walking in Sussex. These paintings were done to mark the 700th anniversary of the Church of Clumping. Then can still be seen there today. The paintings were controversial because they showed Jesus walking with some leaders of the day. Hardy was commissioned by several dignified patrons, including Colonel Wyndham Murray, the Marquis of Zealand, and the Crenshaw’s Sitwell’s.
