French printmaker and painter Gudin (Born 1802) studied at the École des Beaux-Arts under Antoine-Jean Gros and Anne-Louis Girodet. He entered the institution on 30 January 1817. Gudin interrupted his Neo-classical training due to the emergence of the Romantic Movement and became a friend and disciple of Géricault and Delacroix. He became famous throughout Europe as a marine painter. He was the most distinguished marine painter of the first half of the 19th century. In 1822, he began exhibiting at the Salons and in 1824 he won a 1st-class medal. His submission at the Salon included the depiction of a Romantic subject, Episodes from a Shipwreck. However, what threw him into the limelight as a marine painter was a piece titled the “Fire on the Kent.” This piece was exhibited at the Salon of 1827. Following this success, Gudin nurtured his talent for historical naval subjects on a large scale. It was not long before he became the leading painter of sea battles in France. His style is characterized by the use of impasto, the careful execution of motifs and the faithful rendering of water. King Louis-Philippe much patronized Gudin while Charles X awarded him the Legion of Honour. Gudin’s paintings in watercolor and sepia wash were much admired for their atmospheric depictions of stormy seas, placid waters, harbor scenes by moonlight and sunsets and were avidly acquired by connoisseurs and collectors throughout Europe. Even today, his art is as popular as it was then, especially the ready to hang Gudin art.
