J. J. Grandville (Born in 1803) (real name Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard) was a caricature artist and lithographer of the 19th Century. In some ways, Grandville was artistically ahead of his time, had what critics like Melot referred to as “the boldness of an illustrative thoughts that anticipated the Surrealists.” He was born in Nancy, France, and he chose the name Grandville in line with his father's lead. His father had also adopted the Grandville surname which was used by his grandparent who was a comedian and was using it as a stage name. Because of the intellectual sharpness and the extreme topicality of his cartoons which were political and also because of the descriptive captions that accompanied them, the modern reader may face challenges in determining their relevance or true meaning; however, his works are for the most part accessible to the modern viewer who can also appreciate them. His art somewhat apparently resemble the illustrations that depict the twaddle fantasies of his contemporary Carroll Lewis, whose book “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” was published nearly 2 decades after Grandville's death. However, his themes depict the social and psychological explorations of artists who were working in the 20th century. Grandville's father was a miniature painter and he taught him how to paint and draw. Grandville became very obsessive in his drawing habits and covered the walls of his room with his work. The young artist was less skillful at painting than drawing and demonstrated an early talent for using pencil to create caricatures. Framed J. J. Grandville art are very common in people’s homes today.
