Mark Gleberzon is a Toronto-based artist who was most drawn to pop artists like Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol. He loved their broad compositions, bright colors and scale. Being a kid of the 70’s, he was easily smitten by and drawn to what these artists did, especially seeing them appropriate pop culture imagery in their work. Another artist whom he also admired and was an early favorite was Drapell Joseph, a Canadian artist. Joseph Gleberzon brought texture into his work and that fascinated Gleberzon. He also loved the sculpture and forms of Oceanic cultures including body adornments and carvings from Papua New Guinea. Gleberzon has exhibited his work in indoor and outdoor events throughout Asia, Europe and North America and is known for his melding of photography and painting. His work is multi-disciplined. The artist is constantly experimenting and has been seeing how the creative process works. He always says he won’t know if he can master something until he gives it a try. He brings together fragments of found objects and highlights them into beautiful arrangements that create stories about history, personal space and identity. His inspiration comes from natural historical elements, observation, and taking an approach that’s exploration-like to his process; including blurring the lines between his photography and painting and also mixed-media collage. Currently, he’s working at Ryerson University on a series of lectures about his publications. He uses traditional photographs, artifacts, natural historical elements and salvaged wood & picture frames. This makes his art, especially the framed Mark Gleberzon art to be easily recognizable.
