Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449 – 1494) was born in Florence, Italy. He was a Renaissance painter and, along with Sandro Botticelli, Verrocchio and the Pollaiolo brothers, was part of the 3rd generation of the Florentine Renaissance. Ghirlandaio headed a large workshop where he was working together with his two brothers Benedetto Ghirlandaio and Davide Ghirlandaio, his late son Ridolfo Ghirlandaio, and his brother-in-law from San Gimignano, Sebastiano Mainardi. Among the many apprentices that passed through Ghirlandaio’s workshop, the most famous was Michelangelo. Ghirlandaio has particularly talented in the ability to depict portraits of contemporary people and contemporary life within the context of religious narratives. This made his art to be very popular and got many large commissions. Ghirlandaio was the eldest son to Antonia di ser Paolo Paoli and her husband Tommaso Bigordi. Of all their six children, only Domenico and his brothers mentioned earlier survived childhood. Ghirlandaio was at first apprenticed to his father, who was a goldsmith. He made portraits of the visitors to the shop and passers-by: When the country people or anyone passed through his studio he immediately captured their likeness which he painted. As time went by, Ghirlandaio was apprenticed to Alesso Baldovinetti to study mosaic and painting. He was also apprenticed to Andrea del Verrocchio while he was in Florence, and he maintained a very close association with other painters from Florence including Perugino and Botticelli.
