Marguerite Gerard (born 1761) was a French painter and etcher. She was born in Grasse to Claude Gérard and Marie Gilette. She became the sister-in-law of Jean-Honore Fragonard when she was 8 years old, and at age 14 she came to live with him. Marguerite was also the aunt of Alexandre-Evariste Fragonard who was also an artist. In the mid-1770s, she became Fragonard's pupil and studied printmaking, drawing and painting under his tutelage. Together with Fragonard, she executed five etching in 1778. Marguerite’s mother died in 1775 and she moved to Louvre to live with her sister and her sister's husband Jean-Honoré Fragonard. For next 30 years, she lived in Louvre and this allowed her to view and be inspired by great artworks of the past and present. What she liked most and greatly inspired her were the scenes of Dutch Golden Age which she tried to copy in her work. Marguerite never painted political themes, but chose to concentrate on panting scenes of domestic life that centered on women and children. She attended and participated in many art exhibitions. Today, framed Marguerite Gerard art can be found in many art galleries and museums and with many public and private collectors throughout the world. Marguerite’s association with the Frangonards gave her the freedom to remain unmarried without becoming a financial burden to herself or her parents, so she devoted much of her to working on her artwork. She was an extremely successful painter whose work continues to inspire many upcoming artists.
