Walter H. Fitch (Born 1817 - Died in 1892) was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He was a botanical illustrator who executed more than 10,000 drawings for various publications. He also produced about 3,000 color lithograph for Curtis's Botanical Magazine. He was producing up to 200 plates every year. He was one of the most talented and the most productive botanical artists of the Victorian era. He was educated locally and apprenticed at the age of 17 to a firm of calico designers. His work in art began a an early age, he was involved in fabric printing in his teens and took to botanical art after meeting a competent botanical illustrator called William Hooker Jackson. William was also a Regius Professor of Botany and the editor of Curtis's Botanical Magazine. In 1834 Fitch's first lithograph appeared in the Botanical Magazine, and he soon became the only artist for the magazine. In 1841 William Hooker became director of Royal Botanic Gardens, and Fitch moved to London. At the age of 24 Fitch became the sole artist for all unofficial and even official publications issued by Kew; William Hooker personally paid for his work was. It was common for him to work on several different publications simultaneously. So to save time he could draw directly onto the lithographic stone. Fitch's chromolithographs produced some of his most spectacular results. They were based on botanical illustrations provided by William and others. Today his work can mainly be found in the form of framed Walter H. Fitch art.
