John E. Ferneley, Sr. (Born 1782) was born in Thrussington, Leicestershire. Examples of his work can be found in many significant public and private sporting collections, including those at The Tate Gallery, London; The National Museum of Racing, Saratoga; Worthing Art Gallery; Hull Art Gallery; and the Leicester Art Gallery. His artistic talent was noticed first by the Duke of Rutland then by others who observed his artworks. His work was exhibited from 1806 to 1853 at the Royal Academy. In Melton Mowbray he got married and built his studio and later a house on the Scalford Rd. Ferneley studied under Benjamin Marshall, the noted equestrian artist of the time. Later, he spent the next 3 years as an apprentice and it was during this period that he joined the Royal Academy School. His paintings mainly depicted hunting because it was extremely fashionable those days. His work was in great demand, his clients including many personalities and Royals. He routinely was commissioned to paint the famous Cottesmore, Belvoir, and Quorn hunts. Today his art is mainly sold as framed John E. Ferneley, Sr. art; though there are also other finishing options available. Ferneley specialized in painting panoramic paintings showing sequences of events. His art was therefore telling stories and was used to capture memorable moments. His signature was done very delicately in the wet paint with a pin head and often hidden on stable door, a fence, or in an unexpected corner of the painting. His art inspires many upcoming artists.
