Born in Heidelberg, Germany, Georg Dionysius Ehret (Born in 1708) first became a gardener at a local castle before he developed his artistic interests. He was born to Anna Maria Ehret, competent draughtsman, and Christian Ferdinand Ehret, a gardener. He began by drawing plants for a local apothecary and later for Christoph Trew, his first patron who was a Nuremberg physician and botanist. Ehret became one of the most influential botanical artists of all time in Europe. His first illustrations were in collaboration with George Clifford and Carl Linnaeus in 1735-1736. Geroge was a wealthy Dutch governor and banker of the Dutch East India Company. He was also a keen botanist with a large herbarium. Due to his large income he was able to attract the talents of artists like Ehret and botanists such as Linnaeus. Ehret was able to further develop his skills and became recognized as an outstanding botanical artist as a result of the new exotic plants that were being introduced to Germany and then coming into the possession of Christoph. He lived at a time of enlightenment and scientific discovery in Europe. This was regarded as the golden age of botanical art. In around 1736 before he went to England, he spent 2 years in France, briefly in Paris at the Jardin des Plantes, where he met Claude Aubriet the renowned King's painter. His unique clarity and style of plant illustration became useful and immediately specialists began to seek him out. Even today framed Georg Dionysius Ehret art are much sought after by many institutions and individuals, especially botanists. He died in 1770in Chelsea and a plant (Ehretia) was named in his honor.
