Gustave Doré (Born 1875) produced a great number of religious paintings, but they were not intended for a church like most of the pieces of art that his contemporaries produced. Due to the indifference in France, the artist preferred to work in England where his enormous canvases were on display at the Doré Gallery before they were purchased by museums or individual art lovers. Most of his religious works presented in Bourg remained in his studio until his death in 1880. Even more conceivably than artists like Cabanel or Gérôme, his works were ahead of their time. No man is a prophet in his own country. The artist thought of himself as being above all as a painter, but many never acknowledged him as such, especially in France - and Doré is known to have suffered from it. Even as late as 1954, Haug Hans, curator at the Musée de Strasbourg, wrote that "Doré remained a failed painter. Doré was self-taught but a generous artist, in love with Byron, Victor Hugo and Dante. Therefore, his work cannot be summed up only in his illustrations. He was indeed a great painter, and was very prolific at that. He’s the author of some striking pieces that are recognized in England. This even made a gallery to be inaugurated in his name. He was also recognized in the US where he was sought after by many collectors – more so for the framed Gustave Doré art. Doré liked to paint vast scenes of mountains in a style similar to that of the Hudson River school.
