Frank Dicksee (1853 – 1928) was an English painter and illustrator. His uncle John Robert Dicksee was also a painter, as were his sister Margaret Isabel and brother Herbert Thomas. Dicksee loved art from a young age and would spend much of his free time sketching, drawing and painting. He knew that at one point in time he would become and artist. He studied in his father’s studio of before entering the Royal Academy Schools in London. Dicksee also began to work as an illustrator during the 1870s. He contributed to Cornhill Magazine, Cassell's Magazine, The Graphic and other periodicals. Ten years later, Cassell & Co. commissioned him to illustrate their editions of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and Othello, and Longfellow's Evangeline. He executed his paintings with rich orchestrations of color and textural fluidity. His paintings reveal a curious blend of influences, including the abstracted idealism of G. F. Watts and the classicism of Frederic Leighton. That's why framed Frank Dicksee art are much sought after by collectors today. His studies with Henry Holiday, a designer of stained glass, resulted in his predilection for the decorative aspects of painting. He publicly condemned the artistic trends that emerged towards the end of his life and passionately championed the Victorian ideals of High Art. His artwork covers a wide range of genres and subject matter, including allegorical and biblical paintings. Dicksee was elected ARA, RA and PRA, and was knighted and made KCVO. Dicksee won many awards including silver and gold medals.
