Artist Giorgio de Chirico (Born 1888) was born to Italian parents in Volos, Greece. He’s best known for his influence on the Surrealist movement and for his inscrutable paintings of the 1910s and 1920s. As a young artist, he got his inspiration from the European Symbolist artists; particularly their use of dream-like imagery really attracted him. De Chirico first studied art in Athens at the Higher School of Fine Arts. De Chirico’s earliest signature works combined his philosophical musings on the true nature of reality and a Symbolist sensibility with his love of the traditional relics of Italy and Greece. In a painting such as "Enigma of an Autumn Afternoon" which he did in 1910, the artist depicted spectacularly lit city piazzas inhabited only by a few figures, mysterious shadows or a statue. He traveled to Paris, France in 1911. That’s where his brother Andrea was living. While in Paris, he met a number of influential writers and artists, including Constantin Brancusi and Pablo Picasso. He also exhibited his work. His important works from these years include "The Soothsayer's Recompense", "The Enigma of an Autumn Afternoon," and "The Mystery and Melancholy of a Street." They were all "metaphysical." De Chirico produced his art in a variety of finishing options including framed Giorgio de Chirico art which was and still is popular with many collectors. De Chirico’s father died in 1905, so his family moved to Munich, where he completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts. After his studies which took 2 years, he continued to educate himself and took particular interest in Friedrich Nietzsche’s and Arthur Schopenhauer’s philosophical writings.
