Montague Dawson (Born 1895) was a great artist whose subjects ranged from the return of the CUTTY SARK, moments from Independence War of America, paintings the Battle of Trafalgar, to the races between the tea clippers returning from China to London. He was actually a self-taught sea painter. Born in Chiswick, England, Dawson was the son of a Thames yachtsman and inventor, and he was the grandson of Dawson Henry, a very successful landscape artist in his time. He began drawing as a child and knew he would be an artist. Being a self-taught artist, he was a very keen observer and was very keen to small details. He researched carefully for a piece of art and never intentionally left an inaccuracy without correcting it, even for the sake of artistic effect. Dawson did his first painting just after his 5th birthday. The painting was of watercolor sunset and it made him be known in the area where he was living. His career as an artist was greatly influenced by C. Napier Hemy RA, a prominent artist who lived at Falmouth. With the onset of the First World War, the artist joined the Royal Navy but he continued to paint. Dawson became a regular contributor to a magazine called the "Sphere" with reconstructions of the war at sea and with pictures. Currently, framed Montague Dawson art are very common in many prestigious buildings around the world. They are highly priced by discerning collectors. He died 1973, leaving behind a memorable legacy.
