Animal illustrator and painter Horatio Henry Couldery (born 1832) was born in Lewisham, London. He was initially trained as a cabinetmaker but he later abandoned that trade and joined the Royal Academy of Arts to study art, and also exhibited there as well as at in Suffolk Street at the Royal Society of British Artists gallery, at the British Institution, and at other notable galleries both in the capital and the regions. Couldery is well known especially for his depictions of domestic dogs, kittens and cats. He had his first exhibition titled "On Dangerous Ground" at the Royal Academy. The painting is currently in the collection in Ontario Canada at Glanmore National Historic Site in Belleville. The collection has an artifact collection called the “Couldery Collection.” The collection is considered to be the world's largest collection of his work held in public trust and includes 42 paintings by Couldery. Couldery often successfully captured the personality and character of the pets. He painted with a sense of humor. Framed Horatio Henry Couldery art are currently being held in many prestigious collections around the world. They are in great demand, especially among animal lovers. Couldery worked as a professional artist for several years, illustrating greeting cards and children’s books as well as creating commissioned pieces. He had a great attention to detail and was well known for his depiction in minute detail, of the texture of animal fur. His art career flourished until about 1893. He died at Elizabeth Villa on February 4, 1918.
