Phillip Clayton-Thompson was a creator and collector of art. He had filing cabinets and wonderfully numbered boxes (cardboard) piled to the ceiling, stuffed with the photographs, ephemera, cuttings, menus and bus tickets that fed his work. In fact, he kept absolutely everything: Clayton-Thompson liked to look, as well as touch. The artist was born in London, but was later brought up in Hastings. He studied for 2 years at an art school in the town. He was a prolific teacher, designer and artist who put his characteristic thumbprint on every surface that’s available. He began drawing as a child and knew he would be an artist. He was a very keen observer and was very keen to small details. He researched carefully for a piece of art and never intentionally left an inaccuracy without correcting it, even for the sake of artistic effect. After his graduation, Clayton-Thompson joined the national service in the army and was posted in Egypt, where he went to the Central school for 4 years. He then worked at the WS Crawford advertising agency from 1953 to 1957, and then went freelance and later on set up his own business in 1960. He hoped that his viewer found a combination of amusement and beauty in his subject matter and concepts. Currently, framed Phillip Clayton-Thompson art are very common in many prestigious buildings around the world. They are highly priced by discerning collectors. As an illustrator, he had clients such as IBM, HarperCollins, British Airways and the British Council.
