Julia Margaret Cameron (Born 1815) was born and raised in Calcutta, India. She received her first camera as a gift from her son-in-law and daughter. By then, she was 48, a mother of 6, and a well read, deeply religious, to some extent peculiar friend of many of greatest minds of Victorian England: the poets Robert Browning, the painter G. F. Watts; Alfred Lord Tennyson, and Henry Taylor, the scientists Sir John Herschel and Charles Darwin; and the philosopher and historian Carlyle Thomas. Ten years after she was given the gift of the camera, it became far more than a pastime to her. She says that from the first moment she handled her lens with a tender passion, it became to her as a living thing and a companion, whose memory and voice and creative vigor keeps her going. Her gripping figure studies and portraits, and biblical themes were exceptional in her time and, to date, they remain among the Victorian photographs that are most highly admired. The framed Julia Margaret Cameron art are admired by many collectors because they can be used to decorate any space. For this reason, they are highly priced by many discriminating collectors. Photography became her link to the scientists, artists, and writers who were her artistic and spiritual advisors, neighbors, intellectual correspondents and friends. She began without any knowledge of the art of photography. She did not even know how to focus her sitter, where to place her dark box, and she effaced her first picture by rubbing her hand over the side of the glass.
