Marine artist, James Buttersworth (Born 1859) considered as one of the leading American ship portraitists of the 19th century. Born in London, England, he studied painting with his father, Thomas Buttersworth, who was also a maritime artist. His works are found in prestigious private institutions and collections including: Amon Carter Museum, Fort Worth, Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Peabody Museum, Salem, Yale University Art Gallery, New Haven, New Orleans Museum of Art, New Orleans, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Philadelphia, The Newark Museum, Newark, to name but a few. His paintings are particularly known for their dramatic settings, meticulous detail, and grace in movement. Buttersworth moved to the U.S. around 1845, and settled in Union City, New Jersey and also maintained a studio in Brooklyn in 1854. Buttersworth is viewed by many as the finest painter of the sailing vessels in America. He’s particularly noted for his yacht racing scenes that looked so realistic. His ability to render maritime action in thorough detail led to many commissions frequently from yacht owners who sought to memorize their sporting success on canvas. Buttersworth died in 1894. More than six hundred pieces of his art survive today. These pieces are in a variety of finishing options including framed James Buttersworth art. His art are found in museums and private collections all over the United States, including New Jersey, Virginia, New York, and Connecticut. They have also been featured on the television series Antiques Roadshow. Buttersworth got initiated into the America's Cup Hall of Fame in 1999.
