Sarah Butcher is an art educator and an artist who has lived in Baltimore all her life. Sarah’s art has been described as diverse and clear with two different processes emerging. In one process photography and digital tools are involved while the other process employs canvas, traditional paint, and sometimes collage. In her early life, artistic influences were present because she was born in an artistic family. Sarah describes her father as an artist who by bad luck never had the time to pursue what he referred to as his own art but encouraged her with family art sessions after dinner. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Art from the University of Notre Dame of Maryland (Formerly the College of Notre Dame of Maryland) Her early works showed the influence of her painting mentor and teacher Goldstein Gladys. Sarah created large abstract impressionistic collages and paintings that had resemblance to the style of Helen Frankenthaler and Goldstein. Later the artist worked for her father and developed a passion for graphic design, typography and the use of machines to create art. While at it, she began to explore xerographic processes and photography. The early influences built the expressive, gestural yet structural methods that she uses today.
