Thomas Bretland (Born on 21 April, 1802) was born in Nottingham. He was the son of the owner of a coach and carriage business. His father wanted him to join the family firm which he obliged, and in 1816 he became an apprentice. Though he disliked the job, he is said to have excelled at it and impressed the clients. However, since ha had started sketching at an early age, his main aspiration was to train as an artist. Bretland married Nancy Ingham in 1828. By this time he had become a partner in the family business but was also receiving commissions for animal portraits. After the death of his father, Bretland handed over the business into his brother and took up animal painting full-time encouraged by Lord Middleton who was one of his important patrons. His other patrons included the Dukes of Montrose and Buccleuch, Baron Rothschild and Lord Chesterfield. His wife died in 1843 leaving behind two daughters. He started to travel widely from his base at Sneinton painting commissions in Ireland and Scotland as well as various parts of England. He decided to re-marry in 1852 and had five more children with his new wife, Emma. It was around this time that he moved back to Nottingham where he became a burgher of the city. Examples of his paintings can be seen in the Nottingham Art Gallery. He worked mainly in oils and his subject matter covered hunting scenes as well as animal portraits and landscapes. Framed Thomas Bretland art continue to inspire many artists. His works are exceptionally good and most of them were privately commissioned.
