Billy Brauer grew up in Queens, New York. He knew from an early age that he would become an artist. He is known nationally for his sensual figurative paintings. Brauer attended the School of Visual Arts in New York City under Federico Castellon, the renowned surrealist painter. He started his career as a print maker and an illustrator. He applied his imagination and intellect to progress in his profession. Brauer feels he still uses the concepts of design he learned as an illustrator as a painter, manipulating form and space to create a sense of mystery and tension. In 1974, Brauer held his first major exhibition with the Associated American Artists, "New Talent in Printmaking" exhibition. His work was selected for the permanent collection of the Brooklyn Museum and was featured in the "19th Annual Print Exhibition. The work gained acclaim, and was sought after for exhibition. Brauer received an individual grant from the Vermont Arts Council in 1976. In 1978, he began to concentrate exclusively on painting. His work won many awards and has since been exhibited extensively across the United States in both group and solo exhibitions. His work draws inspiration from a variety of sources, including motifs, Roman, Greek, and Egyptian mythology. He uses a shallow visual depth and a single light source to create tension and dramatic light and dark patterns. He likes to create an alluring mood in his paintings that attracts the viewer, and then give them something to hang on to. He often uses cast shadows, which take on their own presence, adding an air of mystery to the works. Framed Billy Brauer art is available in many private and public institutions.
