Michael Boym (Born 1612) was born in Poland. He died in 1659 in Thailand. During his time, much of artwork was done by Jesuit missionaries and they were used to inform the Europeans of their discoveries, and also to equip themselves with grammars and dictionaries for their labors in China. Boym must have been the first to publish learning aids. And he did it in a way that made those tools themselves easy to get to by Europeans, as the basis for a proficiency in Chinese culture and language which was not simply dependent on missionary effort in China. Boym unquestionably produced maps of China, and a work on Chinese flora (together with some animals), which was published in 1656 in Vienna, and other works that were of medical relevance. Boym was a missionary from Poland who arrived in China in 1646. This was shortly after the official establishment of the Ching dynasty. He settled in Haina and from there, he went to Macao. In 1631, he joined the Jesuits and was ordained a priest. Twelve years later, after years of intensive studies in the monasteries of Kalisz, Kraków, Sandomierz and Jarosław, he embarked on a journey to Eastern Asia. Boym first traveled to Rome, from where he was a blessed by Pope Urban VIII for his mission, and he then proceeded to Lisbon. He left a legacy that continues to inspire many artists today. Many pieces of art by this artist can be found in many institutions around the world.
