Abraham Bloemaert (Born 1564) was an influential Dutch Mannerist engraver and painter. He studied at Utrecht, spent 3 year in Paris, and then returned to Utrecht, where he was appointed the dean of the Guild of St. Luke. Bloemaert etched and painted allegorical and historical pictures of flowers, animals, still lifes, and landscapes. His four sons Adrean, Cornelis, Fredrick and Hendrick, all achieved considerable reputation as engravers and painters. Bloemaert’s work was influenced by Caravaggio. He was also a great influence to many artists, among them Jan Baptist Weenix, Jan Both, Gerrit van Honthorst, Aelbert Jacobszoon Cuyp, and Hendrik Terbrugghen. In 1591, his father was appointed city architect in Amsterdam and he used to accompany him there. Bloemaert’s father died in 1594 and he finally returned to Utrecht where he set up a workshop. He became dean of the zadelaarsgilde in 1594. In 1611, along with Oaulus Moreelse and Joachim Wtewael, they founded the Utrecht Guild of Saint Luke, a new Utrecht painters' guild. Many of his paintings were commissioned by clandestine Catholic churches in Utrecht. Bloemaert was very productive and he excelled more as a colorist than a draughtsman. He began formulating his landscape paintings to include pastoral elements, including picturesque ruined cottages. In these works, the mythological or religious figures played a subordinate role. His favorite subject remained country life, which he depicted with increasing naturalism. Bloemaert drew motifs such as trees, dovecotes, and cottages from life and then he returned to his studio to work them up into complex imaginary scenes. Today, framed Abraham Bloemaert art are much sought after by many leading collectors.
