Basilius Besler (Born 1591) was born in Nuremberg and this is where he was raised up. He liked the environment her so much, especially the plant-life and the landscape. His interest was noticed by many and they knew his career would be something to do with plants. He never disappointed. He set up his own botanical garden, and later on he became a respected botanist and apothecary during the reign of Bishop Conrad Johann von Gemmingen. His dedication and hard work made him to be put in charge of the bishop’s garden. He spent most of his time at the garden and would take his time to collect new species of plant to add to this garden. He liked the plants and that’s how he became an apothecary. He set up a comprehensive collection of natural history specimens and soon people in the area knew him as a collector of natural history specimens and a botanist, and they would even suggest to him where he would get more specimens. His collection became the center of attraction for many viewers, students and teachers, more so because he was always available to guide them. It became one of the leading collections in Nuremberg. He depicted most of the plants in their natural size. He was not a scientist and so he limited himself to indicating where information about each plant could be found in professional writings (Fuchs, Clusius, Camerarius, Lobelius, Cauhin, Tabernaemontanus, etc.). Today, much of his work is available as framed Basilius Besler art and can be seen hanging on many walls around the world.
