Ovanes Berberian (Born 1951) was born in Alaverdy, Armenia, Russia. He received his primary art education under the guidance of his father who was a member of the Armenian Artists’ Society, an important Russian artist, as well as a college art professor and a theatrical set designer. Berberian achieved a significant portion of his art education in this environment, studying at his father’s art school. Following his father’s death, Berberian and his mother and three brothers immigrated to the U.S. and settled in California. Four years later Berberian was awarded a scholarship to study with Sergei Bongart, the noted teacher and master painter. Berberian says that he was influenced by Bongart more than any other artist. Bongart led him in the direction he needed to go, “it was like a light bulb finally came on” he adds. Berberian built his home and studio in Idaho near Bongart, from where he conducts workshops in the summer. His deep understanding of the relationships between hue, color and value make him sought after not only by students who come from near and far for a chance to attend one of his workshops, but by collectors as well. Likewise, the framed Ovanes Berberian art are also in great demand. Berberian uses a painting style that’s easily recognizable. He confidently blends color and brush work to produces picturesque images. This style is depicted in his dramatic still lifes and landscapes. Berberian is an internationally renowned plein air artist and teacher who has been at the head of the American art scene for several years. He likes to paint on location, inspired by the direct confrontation with his subjects.
