Frank Weston Benson (Born 1862) was born in Salem, Massachusetts. Benson was the second of 6 children of George Benson and his wife, Elisabeth Poole. His father was an affluent Boston cotton merchant. His grandfather sailed around the world and brought back from his Far Eastern voyages, many exotic treasures, heirlooms that later appeared in Benson’s paintings. Benson was also financially successful and was an eminent painter, teacher and printmaker. Benson and other painters came together and founded a group called “Ten.” This group consisted of artists who withdrew from the Society of American Artists in 1897. They wanted to promote their work through more personal, smaller exhibitions, the first of which took place in 1898. Much of their work was characterized by a lightened palette, visible brushwork, and a concern with evocative and the natural qualities of light. Elisabeth Poole urged Benson’s father to allow him to enroll in the Boston Museum School that was newly-founded in 1880. His father accepted and Benson studied here for 3 years under Otto Grundmann. While still a student, he began his career in the fall of 1881 as an art teacher. He was hired to teach evening drawing classes which were offered to the public free of charge by the city of Salem. He loved art and produced high quality framed Frank Weston Benson art which were and are still in great demand. Benson won many awards, including the 1893 Columbian Exposition Medal in Chicago and the Hallgarten Prize at the National Academy of Design. In 1896 he provided decorations for wall panels and 7 ceiling in the Library of Congress.
