William Holbrook Beard (April 13, 1825 – February 20, 1900) started his artistic career as a portraitist. He later switched to painting animals and landscapes as his primary subjects. Before settling in New York where he was involved in the establishment of an art community in Buffalo, he had stints in Germany, Switzerland, and Italy, working in those locations for short periods. Beard would later establish a studio in The Studio Building on Tenth Street in New York City. Part of his artistic works that gave him widespread acclaim are fantasy art that depicted animals placed in human situations. He mainly used this approach to allow him satirically share his personal views on things that happened around him. Some of the animals Beard painted are cats, rabbits, and moneys, but was more into painting bears. Over the years, he created several artwork pieces. His most renowned creative works are "The Bear Dance," "The Bulls and Bears in the Market," "Majestic Stag," and "Dancing Bears." Even when focusing on his animal subjects, he enjoyed infusing literature into his works to highlight vices like jealousy and pride. Beard created hundreds of artwork pieces that have sold widely. His artwork pieces are found in galleries and museums across the U.S., including National Museum of Wildlife Art and Smithsonian American Art Museum. As he went into landscape painting, he traveled on a horseback and stagecoach for 400 miles through Rocky Mountains with the hope that he would get inspiration, but nothing. Framed William Holbrook Beard art still sell to date in different galleries, with several other art dealers selling his art in other finishing options such as lamination, canvas, and prints.
