Leland Beaman (Born 1933) was born in Jackson, Michigan. His patrons include: Red Skelton, Vincent Price, Meredith McRae, Supreme Court Judge Mary Coleman, and Senator John McCain. He is known for his murals and posters and also for his paintings of animals, portraits, wild fowl, western genre, and landscapes. Beaman studied at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, Art Institute of Chicago, and in New York City. Before returning to Jackson to open his own studio and gallery and to raise a family, he worked at illustration studios in New York and Chicago, Stone Village Studio. Township in the 1940s, Beaman's father bought a Stone Village complex on Probert Road in Summit and converted the stone barns of the old dairy farm's outbuildings into residences for his children. The children in turn converted village into an arts center in the '60s, home to various studios and theatrical productions. In the early '80s, Beaman made a decision to pack up and head west because making a living as an artist became increasingly difficult. "No one had money for paintings and I thought I'd better find a city where people were buying paintings," he said. Today, framed Leland Beaman art are much sought after by many collectors. Lately, his work has become about finding harmony between the abstract and the realistic, which he described as representing the two sides of his brain. Sometimes his painting can morph between abstraction and realism several times. He often will start a painting with an abstract swath of colors on the canvas then add realistic animals, people, landscapes or plants.
