Georges Barbier (Born 1882) was best known for his fashion illustrations. He was born in a wealthy family in Nantes, France and had a style that very unique this helped him to produce sumptuous illustrations which helped to bring attention to the Art Deco movement. During World War I, he worked as a journalist and created illustrations for many comic publications. He found success as a costume designer after the World War I ended. Barbier died in 1932 and is buried in Nantes. He died at the very pinnacle of his success. At a very young age, he began attending classes of art and honing his design skills. At that age he was able to produce very attractive images and his talent was noticed by many. In the early 20th century Barbier was counted among the great illustrators in France. He was 29 years old when he held his first exhibition which was very successful and was subsequently thrown to the limelight of his career with commissions to design ballet and theatre costumes. He was also commissioned to illustrate books, and to produce fashion illustrations for haute couture. For the next 2 decades, he led a group of artists from the School of Fine Arts to a tribute to their flamboyant and fashionable style and mannerisms of dress. Among those included in this élite circle were Pierre Brissaud and Bernard Boutet de Monvel (both of whom were his first cousins), Georges Lepape, Paul Iribe, and Charles Martin. The framed Georges Barbier art are very easy to recognize.
