James Bama (Born in 1926) was born in the Northeast where he also grew up copying Flash Gordon comic strip by Alex Raymond. Bama had his first professional sale when he was 15. He studied at High School of Music and Art in New York and after graduation he entered the Army Air Corps, where he worked as a mural painter, mechanic, and physical training instructor. After being discharged from the service, he went back to New York City and studied anatomy and drawing at the Art Students League. This helped to improve the quality of hi work. From 1951 to 1966, he worked as an illustrator at Charles E. Cooper Studios in New York. His first paperback cover was A Bullet for Billy the Kid by Nelson Nye. He had a twenty-two-year career as a successful commercial artist, producing illustrations, movie posters and book covers for such publications as Reader's Digest, The Saturday Evening Post and Argosy, and his numerous clients included the Baseball and Football Halls of Fame, the New York Giants football team, and the United States Air Force. Through his detailed portraits of cowboys and Native Americans, Bama has been referred to as an “American Realist.” His style is realism and he’s very keen to detail. He shows the contemporary West preserving its traditional culture in his much-acclaimed studies. His portraits of inhabitants of the mountains and plains capture the true character of the West. Framed James Bama art continue to attract the attention of many art students and professionals alike.
