Sia Aryai was born in Tehran, Iran and displayed an interest in art from early childhood. He found himself in a strict cultural environment which helped to hone his artistic talent. He left Iran for England in the mid-70s where he went ahead and received his formal education and was free to pursue his artistic passions. He later on moved to the United States of America where in the mid-80s, he immersed himself in the medium of photography. Aryai has experimented with gouache, oil and neon paint, but settled on acrylic, mostly because the medium presents a stronger visual and the final product is uniquely different. He creates stunning, unique interpretations of his photographs of trees which he prints on hand painted heavyweight paper. His subject matter is trees which he began photographing almost 10 years ago when he went for a walk in the morning at Griffith Park in Los Angeles. While there, he realized for the first time how characteristic and powerful trees appear when photographed. He loves the printing process and the challenge and the results which in most cases are unexpected. Subject matter and printing process are the 2 key points that identify his series, KI. In his production process, heavyweight, elegant stock is treated with multiple layers of tints and varnish to match shades of the photograph chosen. Framed Sia Aryai art have become a common feature in many homes around the world. He uses hand-painted paper as a medium for his photography; this gives him the ability to change the emotional feel of a print. And layers of gold are presented where ink is missing.
