English engraver and painter Henry Alken (born 1785) was born in Soho, Westminster. He was the third son of a sporting artist called Samuel Alken. Alken baptized on 6th November 1785 at St James's Church, Piccadilly. His family moved to 2, Francis Street East, Bedford Square. Alken first studied under his father and then with John Thomas Barber Beaumont who was a miniature painter. In 1801, he sent a miniature portrait to the Royal Academy Exhibition – the portrait was of Miss Gubbins. He abandoned miniature painting and took on painting and illustrating after he had exhibited a second miniature at the Royal Academy. Early in his career, he painted under the name "Ben Tally-O." His paintings were mainly on sporting subjects. In October 14, 1809, he married Maria Gordon. The year that followed their first son was baptized on 22 August. Alken went on to father 5 children, of whom 3 became artists: Sefferien junior and Samuel Henry. Alken was chiefly known as an illustrator and caricaturist of coaching scenes and sporting subjects. He excelled in this area and his art is loved by sports lovers all over the world. Framed Henry Alken art can be seen hanging on the walls of some of the most prestigious buildings in the world. He worked in both watercolor and oil and his earliest paintings were published anonymously under someone else’s signature, but in 1816 he issued the first production under his own name. Alken died in 1851 and was buried at Highgate cemetery.
