Artist Michael Alford (Born 1958) is a British figurative painter whose work includes figures, cityscapes and landscapes, nudes and portraits. He was born in Cookham, England. Alford is known for an expressive painting style that fuses a sharp, modern sensibility with classical technique, he exhibits extensively in the UK, the US and continental Europe. He currently lives and works in London. Alford’s landscapes and powerful cityscapes of contemporary urban centers, especially London, capture diverse geographies through the eyes of a passionate traveler. His varied body of work reflects his interest in many types of painting. His paintings of figures, nude and clothed, are very popular and are much sought after for their combination of sense of drama, acute observation, and fine draughtsmanship. A sensitive portraitist, he’s frequently commissioned to paint groups and even individuals. His earliest art training came from his father who taught him to draw in perspective while he was still very young. After a stint in the Royal Marines, he joined Durham University where he studied Arabic and Spanish. He travelled extensively in the Middle East and South America, keeping detailed sketchbooks to record his experiences. Alford later studied art at the Chelsea School of Art and the Slade School. Today, framed Michael Alford art are highly priced by many discerning collectors. Travel remains and important source of inspiration for his work. Alford is driven by his love for plein air sketching. He has been appointed war artist to the British Military twice, in 2011 and in 2013. He’s a serving council member of the Chelsea Arts Society.
