Born in Brooklyn, New York, Jean-Michel Basquiat (Born 1960) is the man behind Abstract Graffiti. He was a Painter and an Artist. Basquiat dropped out of high school and started selling postcards and sweatshirts featuring his artwork on the streets so as to earn a living. In the late 1970s, he tagged Manhattan buildings and subway trains with cryptic aphorisms. His popularity increased, so did his personal problems. Basquiat became a druggist and by around 20 years of age, his friends became so much concerned by his excessive use of drugs. The drugs made him to isolate himself from the world around him for long periods of time and he became paranoid. He desperately tried to kick off a heroin addiction and in 1988, he left New York for Hawaii, and returned a few months later claiming to be sober. Unfortunately, this wasn’t the case. On August 12, 1988, he died of a drug overdose in New York City. By then, he was only 27 years old. He’s best known for his collaboration with Warhol Andy (pop artist) and for his primitive style. Although his career as an artist was brief, he has been credited with bringing the American/ African and Latino experience in the art world of the elites. The framed Abstract Graffiti art is today very common in many public places. He began drawing on sheets of paper brought to him by his father at an early age. His father was an accountant by profession, and brought home so many pieces of paper from work.
