Harold Feinstein (Born 1931) was born in Coney Island. He’s best remembered for his engagement with Coney Island for sixty years. The show he held in 1990 at the International Center for Photography elicited a lot of reactions from viewers and critics. One of the reviewers said that he was “a true photographer’s photographer.” While his work in Coney Island has been much celebrated, the photographer’s exposure and breadth are far greater. The photographs he took from the Korean War, which he took from the perspective of a draftee, offered a close look at the daily life of young draftees from orientation, to the basic training, and finally to the front lines. Furthermore, he had a large collection of nudes, classic street photography, still life and portraits. His first black-and-white monograph was published in 2012 by Nazraeli Press. The same monograph won a Photo District News award in 2013 in the Best Photo Books category. Feinstein began his career in photography at the age of 15 in 1946 and within 4 years, an early supporter called Steichen Edward had purchased his work for the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art. He first began exploring color in the mid 1980’s; this resulted in a large archive of imagery produced as both dye transfer prints and cibachrome. Framed Harold Feinstein art are today found in many art stores all over the world. Feinstein used to exhibit at Limelight Gallery. He died on June 20, 2015in his home in Merrimac, MA.
