The game is played by two teams of 11 players each and the purpose is to score as many goals as possible, by defeating the opposing goaltender. Soccer is played exclusively with the foot, which explains why in Europe it is routinely called football, with the goalkeepers being the only ones allowed to touch it by hand. The game was invented in England and has been played at a professional level for more than 150 years, but grew exponentially over the last few decades.
