New York-based artist Tamar Zinn is the artist behind the famous Broadway series which reflect her life-long connections to both music and movement. She’s a visual artist who says that the patterns and structure in her paintings are influenced by the melodic and rhythmic elements of music. She developed the series with the vocabulary of geometric abstraction. Broadway series is noted for the conversations between calm and activity, depth and surface, simplicity and complexity. As with all her work, her process of painting is intuitive, and has no endpoint that’s preconceived. The final product usually emerges from the repeated sanding and scraping of layers that are thinly painted. Tamar’s work is included in numerous private and public collections across the US. Her work has appeared in group exhibitions, including several at No Chromophobia, at OK Harris, and at The Painting Center in NYC. Her process of painting is reflective and leisurely, but she doesn’t rely on a set of rules or a system to develop each painting. Tamar is particularly interested in conversations between calmness and activity, and along with finding rhythm in the forms in her desire to provide a space for contemplation. In 2013, a solo exhibit of her paintings, “Still/Dancing” was presented at Kathryn Markel Fine Arts in New York. Exploration of spatial ambiguity has also been an ongoing and a significant line in her work. She’s interested in how people perceive solidity/substance, what do people see as void or empty, and the question as to whether each state immutable. Through her compositions, she continues to offer up questions, rather than certainty. This has made her art to be sought after by many collectors, especially framed Tamar Zinn art.
