William Sutton (Born 1917) loved art from his childhood. He first attended art classes while still a high school student, and later joined Canterbury College School of Art, from where he graduated in 1937. He was enlisted in the military and after service; he joined the Anglo-French Art Centre in London for further studies. Sutton was tutored by many renowned Canterbury artists, including Archibald Nicoll, Evelyn Page and Colin Lovell-Smith, and in 1937 he gained his Diploma of Fine Arts. He travelled and saw the work of the masters from Europe as well as documented his journey with paintings. Born and based in New Zealand, Sutton became a landscape artist and portraitist. He later returned to Canterbury College School of Art to teach and taught there for over 30 years. Ten years later, he moved to London where he studied shortly in St John’s Wood at the Anglo-French centre. His work is known all over the world, more so because he produces them in a variety of finishing options including framed William Sutton art which come ready to hang with all the required accessories. At College School of Art of Canterbury University he was appointed senior lecturer in 1959. He taught many artists here who later became world leading artists. From the 1940s to the 1950s, Sutton followed the footsteps of his fellow Canterbury artists, such as Louise Henderson, Rata Lovell-Smith and Colin and Rita Angus, and developed a distinguishing interpretation of the Canterbury landscape. His art is highly sought after because they can be used to decorate any space and any room.
