Emil Rudolf Weiss (Born 1875) was a painter, graphic designer, calligrapher, illustrator, wood-engraver, and a poet. He died of heart attack in November 1942 aged 67. Early in 1943, a memorial was held in his honor at the Schiller Theatre in Berlin. Weiss’s colleague and old friend, Hartmann Georg, produced a booklet for those who attended. The booklet has been reproduced and translated following the style of the letterpress which is original and was printed by Driscoll Phil at Clinton, Michigan. As a student and young man, Weiss was influenced by the style which was new and was dominant in Europe at the end of the century. He was able to produce high quality and attractive work that captured the attention of the Bauer Typefoundry. Most of his book designs were for mass market books. He also designed the general layout of books including the various bindings and the title-page. The artist went back to Friedrich Johann Ungar types of the 18th-century for inspiration. His essays reflected his interest in his subjects/themes and in giving such books the best cover possible. He also designed stained-glass windows, fabrics, wallpapers, company logos, furniture, ceramics, and was a muralist for ocean liners and country houses. The artist designed special editions for book collectors clubs including his account of a vacation: published in 1931, using his magnificent roman typeface. As a poet his wordings were set to music by Max Kretschmar and Jan Sibelius. Framed Emil Rudolf Weiss art are very common in many galleries today.
