Adriaen van de Velde was born on November 30, 1636 in to a family of painters. He was a Dutch draftsman, painter, and etcher who specialized in animals and landscapes. His brother, Willem van de Velde the Younger, and his father, Willem van de Velde I, were celebrated marine artists. Like his brother, his father was his first teacher. He then moved to complete his apprenticeship in Haarlem in the studio of Jan Wijnants, a painter who was specializing in dune landscapes. Adriaen van de Velde settled in Amsterdam in 1657. This is where he lived until his death. His career lasted for only two decades, but he was a highly prolific artist who produced a large number of prints, paintings, and drawings and signed works survive from almost every year from 1654 to 1671. Most of his compositions comprised of Italian views as well as landscapes of Holland. The former are based on the works of Karel du Jardin Nicolaes and Berchem and there is no information to suggest that he travelled to Italy. The artworks depicted animals and shepherds in mountainous landscapes, illuminated by a clear, Mediterranean light and with classical ruins. The figures in his compositions are notable for their individuality, their large scale, and the care with which he painted them. He was a versatile artist who also painted portraits set in exteriors, winter scenes, religious and historical compositions, allegories, as well as some genre paintings. He was often commissioned to paint figures in compositions by fellow artists and his hand can be detected in works by Philips Koninck, Jan Wijnants, Jacob van Ruisdael, Frederick de Moucheron, Hobbema, and Jan van Der Heyden. Van de Velde died in 1672 in Amsterdam at the early age of 35. And for those who would like to have framed Adriaen van de Velde art in their interiors, they can be found in art dealerships and numerous galleries.
