Victor Vasarely (Born 1906) was a preeminent painter from Hungary. He is best known as the father of Optical Art movement. In his early 20s he studied medicine at the Budapest University but his passion for art could not let him continue with his studies in medicine. He abandoned his medical studies and went the Muhely Academy, the center of the Bauhaus movement in Budapest. While at the academy, Vasarely was influenced by the work of artist and color theorist Josef Albers, as well as by Wassily Kandinsky who was among the artists who promoted the Constructivist methods. Vasarely’s earlier work concentrated more on color theory. But in the 1950s through to the 1960s his work became more concerned with the optical potential of the 2D surface. He began using colorful and complex patterns to actively engage the eyes of his viewers, and to convey a sense of kinetic energy across the 2D surface. The time he spent at Breton Beach of Belle Isle in France heavily influenced his work and also prompted him to create his prominent Belle Isle series which displays a motif that he continued to explore extensively throughout his entire body of work - an intrinsic concern with the internal geometry present in the natural world. Vasarely’s works present pattern, form, and color as a single interconnected element. This is the concept that was critical to the production of his more mature works and to the foundation of the Optical Art movement. Today, framed Victor Vasarely art are in great demand throughout the world.
