Van Otteren’s first passions were riding her horse bareback across the countryside and dance. She lived for a number of years in the Himalayas and the Middle East, where she explored portrait photography. Van studied various philosophical disciplines. In the 1980s, she worked in Manhattan as a photographer, but since she was seeking a more peaceful environment to pursue her work, she decided to move to the English countryside in 1989. The National Portrait Gallery in London began to acquire her work almost as soon as she arrived in the countryside and within a year, she created precedent law by becoming the first photographer ever to be granted an artist's working visa to the United Kingdom. Ten years that followed saw her create her art in England and France. In the 1990s, she returned to live in the USA but she continues to travel the world creating unique images that are housed in the collections of major museums on three continents. She has written a photography book titled “Heart of the Horse” which was published by Barnes & Noble in 2004. Van has been included in Who’s Who in American Women and Who’s Who in America since 2005. Light is her chosen medium of expression. In her black-and-white work she uses the camera to capture the contrasts and variations of lightness and darkness emanating from her compositions. Her color photography is the natural progression of her vision as it extends itself into inanimate and nature objects. Framed Van Otteren art are in great demand and can be found with many collectors, both public and private.
