Daryl Thetford was born to a forklift operator and a mother who was a beautician. He was brought up in Bradford, Tennessee, on a 100-acre farm in the rural northwest corner of the state. His parents noticed his artistic talent when he was still very young and they enrolled him in oil painting lessons when he was just nine years old. At the University, Thetford studied counseling and after graduation he worked as a mental health manager, a therapist, and a vocational program director for fifteen years. In 2001, he left formal employment and started working in art full time. Many people have described Thetford’s work as pop, contemporary, graphic or modern. But is has been very difficult to give his style a specific name. And the process that he uses to produce his art has also been described as digital art, photo collage, and digital mixed media. His images range from familiar subjects like cityscapes, guitars, cowboys and bikes to more esoteric pieces dealing with the inner struggle of humans with modern society. His recent exhibits include a group show at the Annenberg Space in Los Angeles; a solo show at the Art Museum at the University of Memphis; a solo show at the Jung Center in Houston, Texas; and another show at the Coffman Gallery at the University of Minnesota. Thetford’s art has also been shown at Mobile Museum of Art, SOFA Contemporary, Art Chicago, Art Dallas, the Knoxville Museum of Art, and others. Framed Daryl Thetford art are in a number of corporate and individual collections across the nation. He currently lives in Chattanooga, Tennessee with his wife Dana Shavin who is an artist and a writer. They enjoy great art, travel, great food, and the company of good friends.
