Mike Smith (Born in 1932) was born in Oregon. He began his artistic career as an abstract painter, but later decided to abandon "schools of thinking and painting” for a number of reasons. His subject matter became his family, the objects of his life, and the town that he lives in and his neighbors. In this portrayal of his small section of the world, his art has captured hearts of many around the globe, and they have found their way into collections in almost every country in the world. A few of his collectors include Ed Asner, Jeffrey Katzenberg, and directors Richard Carpenter and Richard Donner, Mrs. Mark Hatfield and David and Marcia De Patie. Smith spent his childhood growing up in the Puget Sound area and in Vancouver, Washington. These areas have had a great influence in his art. He graduated with a degree in English Literature from the University of Portland. Although he began sculpting and drawing at the age of 2, after an interval of playing baseball, he became a serious full-time artist only after he reached 25. Over the years, the artist has had over 50 one-man shows. The most interesting being a double show he held in a gallery at the American Consulate in Leipzig, Germany. The media he uses includes pastel, watercolor, bronze (fabricated and cast), ceramic, oil, wood, and many printmaking techniques. Currently, he resides in Camas Washington, a small paper and pulp community located on the shores of the Columbia River where he continues to produce his art mainly as framed Mike Smith art.
