Sam Shaw (Born 1912) is a photographer who’s remembered for producing several films, and for his photos of Marlon Brando, Marilyn Monroe and other stars. Immediately after high school graduation, he shared a studio for a time with Romare Bearden, a famed African-American artist. They continued to work together throughout their lives and collaborated on projects with Albert Murray, a jazz and literary critic. Many of his photographs of blues and jazz musicians appear in collages by Bearden. In the 1940s, he worked as a courtroom artist and then as a sports and political cartoonist and with Brooklyn Eagle as the art director. He then became a photojournalist and reporter for Collier's magazine for which he traveled around the US documenting American life in the mid-20th century. The portraits that he produced are of subjects ranging from sharecroppers and coal miners to New Orleans' musicians and burlesque performers. In the 1950s, Shaw began working as a photographer on film sets. One of his first projects was taking publicity stills for Panic in the Streets directed by Elia Kazan in 1950. In 1951, he worked on A Street Named Desire; the set was starring Marlon Brando. He photographed Brando wearing a ripped t-shirt. This particular photograph became one of the most famous images of the film star. His art became so popular and even today, framed Sam Shaw art are in great demand and are selling in large numbers despite being highly priced by many collectors. Shaw died in 1999 after suffering a stroke.
