Guido Reni (Born 1575) was born in Bologna Italy. At the age of 10, he apprenticed to Denis Calvaert, the Flemish painter. He was later influenced by Carracci’s novel naturalism (Carracci was a Bolognese family of painters). He’s noted for the classical idealism of his renderings of religious and mythological subjects. At the age of 24, he was received into the guild of painters. Upon gaining prominence the artist surrounded himself with helpers—such as Antonio Carracci, Francesco Albani, and Giovanni Lanfranco —who were fascinated by his tyrannical if somewhat noble personality. He divided his time between his studios in Rome and Bologna. Early In his career, he executed important commissions for Cardinal Borghese and Pope Paul V, painting numerous frescoes in chapels. Among these works is the “Aurora”, a celebrated fresco which he did from 1613 to 1614. His mythological and religious paintings, such as “Atalanta and Hippomenes” reflect his preference for elegantly posed figures that mirror traditional ideals. In these paintings, the artist evolved a style that moderated Baroque enthusiasm and intricacy with traditional restraint. Reni always strived toward a traditional concord in which actuality is presented in idealized proportions. In the later part of his career, he employed softer colors, lighter tones, and extremely free brushwork. The mood of his paintings is serene and calm, as are the studied softness of form and color. His paintings which were mainly religious made him a model for other Italian Baroque artists, and one of the most famous painters of his day in Europe.
