Sir Edmond John Poynter (Born in 1836) was the son of an architect called Edward Poynter. Born in Paris, he was a man of diverse talents. He was also a designer of tiles, an accomplished illustrator, a medalist and a painter of wall decorations. He was a strong supporter of the Neo-Classical ideas and his art was influenced by Leighton Frederick, whom he met in 1853 in Italy. The Neo-Classical ideas of Frederick were infused in his work. Poynter spent some time in Paris, where he associated with artists including Lamont, Whistler and Armstrong. He also met Daphne Du Maurier, the author who featured him and his group of friends in her novel titled Trilby. He was noted for his expert depiction of the details on his subjects. His work, with keenness to little details, was highly regarded by professional art critics and he received positive reviews from them. His art continue to cause a lot of excitement among viewers and collectors. That’s why many galleries stock ready to hang Sir Edmond John Poynter art.
