Rembrandt Peale (1778 - 1860) was a writer, painter and portraitist. Born in Bucks, Pennsylvania he specialized in portraits of prominent people in the post-Revolutionary United States and in Europe. He was one of the sons of Charles Willson. Peale and his brother Raphaelle inherited the responsibility of head of government portrait painter of Philadelphia after their father’s retirement from the profession in 1794. While his brother was better known for his elegant still life compositions, Peale carried on his father’s reputation in portraiture. Peale studied with Benjamin West, the American expatriate painter in London. During his work, he copied his father’s Neoclassical style especially while he was producing the portrait of Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson’s portrait was acknowledged as Peale’s masterpiece and his best existing portrait. He continued his training in art at the Royal Academy, and between 1808 and 1810 he lived in Paris, where his work was admired by many artist and non-artist as well. Among his admirers was Jacques-Louis David, who was by then a leading Neoclassical artist. However, some people were not happy with his art and he suffered negative criticism from them. This made him to stop painting for some time. Several ears later, he opened a portrait gallery and museum in Baltimore, Md., where he exhibited the first works to be illuminated by gaslight. His art continues to cause a lot of excitement, especially the framed Rembrandt Peale art. When he started painting again he turned to formal subject pieces because he wanted to move beyond portraiture.
