István Nagy (Born 1873) was born and raised in Hungary. He was known for his figure paintings and landscapes. Nagy died in 1937 in Baja where his ill health had made him to settle in with his family. He developed the ill health in 1930 and his physical and mental health began to take a rain check. He contracted cerebral myelitis and after a short while had a stroke that interfered with his speech. However, he continued to paint until almost his final day. Nagy was born into a well-off family who owned land but he never went into farming as a source of livelihood. He chose to attend a teacher training college in Kolozsvár, and he taught in Homokmégy after completing his studies. At college drawing in charcoal was what one of his courses involved and this made him to discover that he had artistic talent. He liked this course more than any and Gusztáv Kelety noticed this and encouraged him to take art as a career. Nagy also knew that he was meant to be an artist. Later on, Nagy went to Budapest where he earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Fine Arts. Here he was taught by Székely Bertalan, a well known artist by then. Nagy also studied with Franz von Lenbach in Munich and due to his hard work and the quality of his products he obtained a scholarship to study in Paris at the Académie Julian. His art still attract a huge following, more so the framed István Nagy art.
